This offering bridges the gap between the game and the rl thing
Over the last few yrs, has been introducing some truly game-changing ftures into its FIFA series. While these were ambitious, they weren’t quite implemented as well as they could have been. FIFA 13 doesn’t include too many major additions over the last yr, but the changes it showcases make it the best playing FIFA game in yrs.
Two of the big gameplay ftures last yr were tactical defending and the player impact engine, but neither worked as intended. This yr, the defending has been tightened and made a little more forgiving, bringing more balance to a game that has for too long been skewed in favour of attackers. The often comedic animations brought on by the physics-driven impact engine are now more subdued, while still infusing a sense of physicality to the game. There are other gameplay twks too – hders on goal are harder, off-the-ball movement is more dynamic, long balls are more effective and the finesse and chip shots less so. All these ld to a more polished and balanced gameplay experience.
Those coming off FIFA 12 will notice the new first touch mechanic. Receiving a pass now requires deft control. Using the close control buttons will allow for a soft or onward first touch, but doing so while sprinting results in a hvy, bobbly touch. The same applies to shooting; doing so while sprinting will ld to an inaccurate and misdirected shot. This seemed a bit restrictive at first, but the first-touch mechanic actually makes for a far more organic gameplay experience, and FIFA 13 is all the better for it.
This game continues the series’ endvour to bridge the gap between the game and the rl thing (which it started with Football Club last yr). With the new Matchday fture, you can play through current and future rl-world fixtures of your favourite club, participate in challenges based on recent rl-world matches, and the commentary also includes snippets of information from rl-world data, such as tms’ ue positions, player form and injuries. The attention to detail and the depth of this game is quite amazing.
Another new addition is the skill games, which are a godsend for newcomers. All of the controls and gameplay nuances can now be lrned via fun mini games, which are tiered across various difficulty levels to help you come to grips with FIFA 13’s complex controls. Elsewhere, there are no new game modes to spk of, but the ones that return have either been updated or refreshed. The Career does away with the player-manager option, but you can now play as a player and then turn manager post-retirement, which is welcome.
FIFA games have always excelled when it comes to online gameplay, and this is where the fun in FIFA 13 rlly begins. Aside from friendlies and custom single matches, you can form Clubs, participate in online tournaments, and compete in Ssons, which are sort of like bite-sized online careers. You can also indue in hd-to-hd Ssons with friends. Then of course, there’s the ever popular trading-based Ultimate Tm, which is an additional purchase if you didn’t preorder the game.
Presentation is top-notch as always. With a toning down of the impact engine and the renewed focus on player individuality as well as signature goal celebrations and running animations, the visuals are a step up from last yr. The audio ups the ante as well, thanks to the addition of Matchday inputs, pitch-side injury updates and score updates from other matches.
FIFA 13 may not be the most revolutionary instalment in the franchise, but it has taken all the innovations from previous yrs and applied twks and updates to help them rlise their full potential. It’s the most balanced FIFA game in yrs, and quite sily the best since FIFA '09.
What we liked: Polished and balanced gameplay; first touch; Matchday; career mode twks; slick presentation; expansive online ftures.
What we didn’t: Nothing drastically new since FIFA 12.
